Mel Gibson Explains How 'Hacksaw Ridge' Challenged His Faith

Watch Mel Gibson's candid sit-down interview with CBN's Wendy Griffith and find out why many believe "Hacksaw Ridge" is his "big comeback."

Actor and drector Mel Gibson is busy promoting his new movie, "Hacksaw Ridge," which opens in theaters nationwide Friday.

"Hacksaw Ridge" is based on the real life story of Desmond Doss, a WWII medic whose Christian faith compelled him not to carry a weapon.

Despite being ridiculed and nearly kicked out of the Army, Doss was able to serve his fellow soldiers and in the process saved countless lives on the battlefield. He went on to be the only conscientious objector to ever be awarded the Medal of Honor.

"I read this script and saw somebody like Desmond Doss and it made me painfully aware of how scant my own faith is," Gibson told CBN's Wendy Griffith when asked how his personal faith affects the movies and roles he chooses.

"Imagine being able to crawl into enemy fire for your brother and save a life, I don't know if I could do that," he continued. "I'd want a weapon at least if I was even going to think about something like that."

Gibson also talked about his "beard" and the sequel to the "Passion of the Christ."
