Glenda, the Good Hairdresser

Whenever four-year-old Kelly asked her mother for milk, she got a glass of rice water instead.

Glenda couldn’t afford to buy milk for her only child.

“It pains me,” Glenda says. “I cry about it a lot.”

Glenda did pedicures in their community near Manila in the Philippines. Her husband, Edward, drives a motorcycle taxi for a living. They worked hard, but just couldn’t seem to get out of debt. And their finances were putting a strain on their marriage.

“We often argue about money,” Glenda says. “Sometimes, we don’t know where our next meal will come from.”

Edward recalls, “Once, I was tempted to join a gang and steal. But I thought about the consequences. What would that do to my family? I didn’t go through with it. I decided to pray and call on God for help.”

Soon after, Operation Blessing offered a free Cosmetology course near Glenda’s home.

Glenda quickly signed up - and a few weeks later, she graduated at the top of her class.

“Before I took the course, I only knew how to do nails. But through Operation Blessing, I learned how to cut, treat, and style hair,” Glenda says proudly.

Operation Blessing also gave her the tools she needed for her new trade. Thanks to her training, Glenda has found work at a salon and helps meet her family’s needs. Little Kelly gets her milk now and has books and clothes as well.

Glenda and Edward have begun to tithe and are debt free. They’ve even saved enough money to build a small house and buy their own motorcycle.

“Operation Blessing came to our community as an answer to our prayers. They’ve changed our lives,” Edward says.

“I thank Operation Blessing for all they've done for us,” Glenda says. “And I thank God for Operation Blessing.”
